Work Sample: Soldier’s Wife, circa 1869

Soldier's wifeCatching a glimpse of a soldier’s wife walking past the Halifax Citadel’s guardroom.

Wait, a soldier’s wife?

That’s right! The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site comes alive every summer with reenactments demonstrating how life was back in 1869 when the 78th Highlanders (a Scottish regiment) were stationed at the fort.

Fun fact: I occasionally donned the traditional soldier’s wife garb for two seasons as I showed tourists around the site. Sounds fun, until you’re standing under the hot August sun in numerous layers of thick bloomers, petticoats and bonnets.
